We publish one signal and its entire record — 509 games across four NHL seasons, graded at the real moneyline available when captured, including the variants we tested and dropped. That is the whole product: not more picks, but a number you can actually check. We never take bets and hold no position on any game.

What the Rest Edge Is

The Rule
๐Ÿ”
Step 1
The away team played last night — they're on a back-to-back.
โ†’
๐Ÿ˜ด
Step 2
The home team has had exactly two days off — not one, not three or more.
โ†’
โšก
Step 3
Back the home team. Flat stake, every occurrence, no discretion.

Held up in all four seasons tested โ€” 509 games, 62.1% win rate, +5.6% ROI at real prices. When both teams are on a back-to-back, the rest difference disappears and no pick is published.

Does It Work? Four-Season Test

Every season so far has been profitable at real prices — but read the 2022–23 row's price column before you take comfort in that. The average price that year was −186, nearly double the other three seasons' −100 to −126 range, which is itself a caveat worth sitting with: we don't have a clean explanation for why the market priced this matchup so much steeper that season, and roughly 100–135 bets a year is a small enough sample that a season swinging the other way — on price, win rate, or both — is well within what a genuine long-run edge can produce. The pooled 95% ROI confidence interval is −2.2% to +13.3%; the point estimate is positive, but the interval includes a flat outcome.

Why We Use Real Prices

Every game is priced at the average US moneyline available when our morning capture job actually runs. Not the closing line, which subscribers cannot bet, and never an assumed −110 — and not a claimed fixed time either: that job's real run time varies by hours day to day, so each game's exact capture time is logged and shown per game in the results on Track Record rather than stated as a single round number. This is why our published ROI is lower than most: assumed pricing inflates a 62% win rate by several points.

What We Tested and Dropped

Narrow home rest to exactly three days — the condition we originally published as Signal 1 — and the edge goes negative: 54.1% over 231 games sounds survivable on its own, but at the real closing moneyline that's −9.4% ROI, pooled across all four backfilled seasons (backtest_rest_signals.py). That's why we retired it instead of publishing it.

ROI is the average across every US bookmaker the Odds API returns for that game at the moment our morning capture job actually runs โ€” typically 9-11 books (DraftKings, FanDuel, BetMGM and others; not a fixed curated list, and not Pinnacle, which this project's Odds API plan doesn't return for NHL) โ€” the price you could actually have taken, not the closing line. That job's exact run time varies day to day rather than firing at a fixed hour; each game's real capture time is logged and shown per game in the results below rather than claimed as a single fixed time.

Method & What We Found

The rule: when the away team played last night and the home team has had exactly two days off, back the home team. Flat stake, every occurrence, no discretion, no filtering after the fact.

How it is graded: every game is priced at the average US moneyline available when our morning capture job actually runs. Not the closing line, which subscribers cannot bet, and never an assumed −110 — and not a claimed fixed time either: that job's real run time varies by hours day to day, so each game's exact capture time is logged and shown per game in the results below rather than stated as a single round number. This is why our published ROI is lower than most: assumed pricing inflates a 62% win rate by several points.

What the four seasons show: the two-day bucket was profitable in every season tested, including three we had never examined when the rule was first written. Combined: 509 games, 62.1% win rate, +5.6% ROI at real prices, with a 95% confidence interval of −2.2% to +13.3% on that ROI — the figure that actually answers whether a bettor made money. (A narrower-looking comparison exists — win rate's own 95% floor, 57.9%, clears the breakeven implied by the pooled average price, 56.5% — but that comparison assumes every bet was placed at one average price, when it wasn't: season averages alone ranged from −100 to −186. The ROI interval accounts for that price variation and the win-rate one does not, so it's the ROI interval we lead with.)

The dead zone: narrow home rest to exactly three days โ€” the condition we originally published as Signal 1 โ€” and the edge goes negative: 54.1% over 231 games sounds survivable on its own, but at the real closing moneyline that's −9.4% ROI, pooled across all four backfilled seasons (backtest_rest_signals.py). That's why we retired it instead of publishing it.

What we cannot explain: two days of rest wins money at real prices (+5.6% ROI, 509 games) and three days loses (−9.4%, 231 games) โ€” both on samples large enough to take seriously. Beyond three days there's a pattern we're tracking, not a finding we're publishing: the 4+ day bucket swings back positive, but on just 80 games (+11.5% ROI, 95% CI −8.6% to +26.6%) โ€” an interval wide enough to include a losing rate, so we are not calling it real. We do not have a clean mechanism for why the edge dips at exactly three days, and we are not claiming to know what happens after that either. We publish the two-day boundary because it is the one the pooled backtest actually supports at a sample size we trust, not because we have a tidy story for the whole shape — and we would rather say that than invent one.

Cancellation: when both teams are on a back-to-back, the rest difference disappears and no pick is published.

Honest limits: roughly 120–135 qualifying games a season means any single year proves very little, and every season so far has landed positive (+3.3% to +8.0%) rather than the flat or losing year a real long-run edge should eventually produce — treat that as good fortune so far, not a guarantee. Average prices have also swung more than we would have guessed: −186 in 2022–23 against −100 to −126 in the other three seasons, and we do not have a clean explanation for why. Every future result lands on this page, whichever way it goes.

Away team on a back-to-back, home team not on a back-to-back (any amount of rest โ€” not the exact two days Rest Edge requires), and the away team starts its own #1 goalie by cumulative starts this season. Back the home side. Same flat stake, same no-discretion rule as Rest Edge โ€” a different, newer question about which goalie the tired road team actually sends out.

What we don't charge for. Our prop research is free, because we tested a shots-on-goal model against 12,576 real priced props and it did not beat the market. It is published as research with its measured accuracy attached, never as a pick. Goalie and fantasy tools are free for the same reason — we have not proven an edge in them, so we will not sell one.
Before you buy a season pass, read this. Our edge is roughly +5.6% over four seasons and 120–135 qualifying bets a year. Every season so far has landed positive, but on a sample this size a flat or losing season is a normal outcome inside a real long-run edge โ€” it just hasn't happened yet โ€” and anyone selling you certainty on a sample this size is not being straight with you.

Grind Line is an independent analytics platform, not a sportsbook — we never take bets and hold no position on any game. Prices shown are current plans and may change before the September launch.
